Make a pair of sprang mittens.
This document guides you through the creation of a swatch, calculation for the warp for the right size of mitten, as well as instructions to transform your piece of sprang into mittens.

Instructions also include information for calculating and dealing with "loom waste" aka that extra length of warp that you do not turn into cloth, but which is necessary for tying the knots.

Make a sprang tam.
This document helps you to make a sprang hat.
It guides you through the process of making a swatch, and measuring your head for the hat. This document helps you to apply the numbers from the swatch to the head measurements, giving you starting length and number of threads (or loops) so you can make your own sprang stocking cap.

At the right you will find a draft document, my attempt to help people expand patterns, fill a wider piece of sprang. I will up-date this document as helpful comments come in. Let me know if you get stuck somewhere in this document ... that's probably a spot that needs better wording, more explanation or a couple of drawings.

Multi Colored warp
For those of you who want to see me in action, setting on a multi-colored warp, watch the video at the left.

And after watching that video, you'll want to know how to work in all those ends. So, I made yet another video, showing you what I call the leader-follower technique.
When you get near the center of your work, things get difficult. Peter Collingwood suggested a manner to work in that restricted space at the middle, by working small groups of threads. I've made a short video showing you that technique ... that works quite nicely.

The chain line is a very traditional way to finish your sprang.
The video at the left explores several different ways to work the chain.
Here is an exercise to help you learn to fix mistakes in your sprang.
According to Mari Voipio, this band is traditional in Western and Central Finland. It has you working the first half of the threads in S-interlinking and the second half each row in Z-interlinking. It is a version of that "under 3 interlinking" discussed in April 2021.
Here are the instructions for making that band.

Sprang Mittens
There are a number of options for sprang mittens. Mostly sprang mittens are made two-at-a-time. You cut the wrp in two pieces. Before you cut you will need to stabilize the two bits of cloth. One idea is to tie knots.

One option is to tie knots to stabilize the cloth.
Picture
For this pair of mittens I used a length of twill tape and with the help of a serger (sewing machine) I stabilized the ends.

Another idea is to place a bit of fleece across your wool warp, and stabilize with the help of a felting needle.

A great finishing technique at the center of a flat warp is the lock stitch.
The video at the right features Ria Hooghiemstra showing you how it is done.
Handy tips from the Sprang-A-Long
Does working with your sprang frame give you a back ache? Are you having trouble with ergonomics?
Bonnie suggested a stand that was made to hold an embroidery frame. She recommends the Frank A Edmunds Stitch Master Frame #6116

Carol acknowledges that we are on Treaty 1 territory, the traditional gathering place of the Anishinaabe, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota and Dene people and the traditional homeland of the Métis people. Carol also acknowledges that sprang is part of many  indigenous traditions  and found in various forms all over the world. Let us re-discover this technique together.
