In this class we explore the method to create interlaced twills with a vertical ridge. The approach to the vertical ridge twill is distinct from the horizontal ridge twill of Part 1. This is the structure of the sprang sashes made by people of the US southwest. It is a dense, sturdy fabric that also has a certain amount of stretch and give.
We will begin with a set of threads, arranged by the instructor, to explore the 2-2 twill, worked with vertical ridges.

We look at a way to create a 2-2 interlacing structure with vertical ribs. One approach has you working right-to-left, and then left-to-right

For the very right-handed, there is an approach that has you always working right-to-left.

Heartened by success with the success of the 2-2 twill, we will then explore the 3-3 vertical ridge twill structure.

These structures can be worked either as free-end braiding or as sprang (in which case you will want your frame). Leave with straps of these two different structures. Participants are encouraged to set up a project for future work, a pair of fingerless mittens, or a rectangle of cloth for scarf or bag, using one of these structures. Time permitting we will also explore twill structures worked in a tube shape. If you bring your sprang frame you might make a pair of fingerless mittens, already in a tube, no need to sew a side seam. |
