Intertwining
Basics

We begin the year with the basic intertwining stitch.
Each thread has a dedicated partner. Together those two threads encounter other thread pairs, creating the cloth.

Here are instructions for that intertwining stitch, in right-handed and left-handed versions.

The instruction sheet and video use colors to help you correctly identify the pairs.

Right Handed
You may want to begin with a piece that starts out with interlinking ... what Carol calls "the basic interlinking stitch" to get the piece of cloth started, and then try out a few rows of intertwining.
This might help ease you into the structure, and also help you understand some of the differences between interlinking and intertwining.

You might also want to compare this intertwining stitch with the interlinking motif Carol calls "doubles grid".
These two have similarities ... but ... they do have stark differences:
-the path the colors travel is different
-the amount of stretch is different
-the thickness of the cloth is different

Colors can also be used to create pattern. Some interesting things happen with colored warps.
Here is a piece of intertwining using a variegated yarn.

Picture
Sharon Wichman used both a variegated yarn and the idea to alternate between rows of interlinking and intertwining. Even with random numbers of rows of intertwining and interlinking it makes a very nice neck scarf.

Picture
This scarf by Sharon Wichman set up color repeats of a background color  and contrasting colors across her warp.
The repeat was:
2 loops of background color
4 loops of contrasting color
2 loops of background color

She then worked 4 rows of interlinking (colors travel vertically) with 4 rows of intertwining, where the colors travelled outward to create an interesting design.
